How to make the most of Twitter

Twitter has become commonplace as a part of a bands online marketing strategy due to the simplicity of use and the number of users who can easily follow a band. However it is important to use Twitter wisely in order to keep fans interested and informed without choking them with boring Tweets.

How best to use Twitter:

Primarily as a source of information about latest singles, videos, gigs etc with required links.
However, either add personal touches to the posts, or post about things that you experience on a day to day basis and which isn't necessarily related to the band. Alternatively, you could have a band Twitter as well as Twitters for each band member to let fans into the personal side of your life. A loyal fan will know about all your music and gigs, probably from your website if you have one, so they want to know about your life when they follow you on Twitter
Tweet regularly on a good mix of topics as I discussed earlier.
Retweet tweets about your band by followers to show you are interested in what they have to say.
Reply to messages for the same reason as above.
Post links to pictures so people can see as well as read about what your up to.
Twitter is most powerful when other people Tweet about you so if you can get lots of people to use the hash tag and then tweet about the same thing which relates to your band you may even get on a trending list.

One of the cleverest things I've seen used on Twitter is to tweet a question to someone you follow that you are confident they will answer and is interesting because if someone with a large twitter following replies, their following are likely to see who you are and if you seem interesting to them they may just listen to your music!
